Reviews of 'Little Wing' from the Second Heart of England Album.
One of the genuine surprises to sneak up on the listener is a fantastic, sensitive reading of Jimi Hendrix's Little wing by the Ric Sanders Group with guest Rick Wakeman sitting in on keys. Fred Hall
A quite sublime Little Wing from Ric Sanders (and that's coming from someone who's never been a massive RS fan!) David Kidman Net Rhythms
Next up are the Ric Sanders Group, comprising Ric, Mike Gregory, Vo Fletcher and guest Rick Wakeman playing a version of "Little Wing." Other than Fairport's occasional forays into things like Led Zeppelin and Procol Harem material with guests at Cropredy, I don't think I have heard Ric play material outside the folk genre since his Soft Machine days, so this is a surprising track. The Album is a showcase of some of the best music around. There isn't a single track I would want to remove or that I'm tempted to skip, and after playing it solidly all week my only regret is that it only plays for about 135 minutes and there is no third or fourth disc. Believe me, your collection needs this album! Green Man Review
Volume 2 features stand out performances from Richard Thompson with a live version of The Sights and Sounds of London Town, the Andy Guttridge Band with Chasing the Dragon, and Dave Swarbrick & Kevin Dempsey with My Heart's in New South Wales. But it's unfair to mention them without talking about the sublime Little Wing from the Ric Sanders Group with Rick Wakeman. Recorded live in Lincoln Cathedral this classic Hendrix tune takes on a new and ethereal existence as it soothes the ear and tingles the spine. Congratulations to Heart of England. Mike Jervis
